Garland is a hand-drawn ornamental display typeface inspired by the decorative vernacular of American music, cinema and celebration — looping penmanship, old Hollywood titles, country records, Christmas choirs, hand-lettered cards and the theatrical world of Judy Garland and Dorothy.
Made entirely by hand, the letters twist, curl and wander. Strokes loop back into themselves, forms hang and drape like ribbons, and some characters almost become little illustrations — a trumpet, a bow, a flourish, a garland hanging across a room.
There’s something nostalgic about Garland, but it’s difficult to place exactly. A little Hollywood. A little Nashville. Christmas cards and wedding invitations. Old sheet music, theatre programmes and record sleeves. Dorothy somewhere over the rainbow.
Rather than reproducing one particular historical lettering style, Garland takes its cues from American ornamental and vernacular lettering and lets things get a little stranger. The alphabet is deliberately irregular, with narrow letters sitting beside wide looping forms and unexpected details appearing throughout.
Each character also comes with hand-drawn alternates, allowing the same word to shift in personality depending on the letters you choose. Keep things simple, or let the loops, curls and flourishes take over. The font is designed for the letters to overlap and be imperfect like ribbons at Christmas.
