Old Piano is a hand-crafted display typeface inspired by old upright pianos, carved wooden furniture, saloon interiors, country music ephemera and the decorative lettering found across vintage American print. All made from scratch by hand.
Old Piano is the sister typeface to Showbill, developed from the same underlying hand-drawn letter skeleton. Where Showbill is squat, theatrical and decorated with stars, Old Piano stretches those familiar forms into taller, leaner proportions, strips away the spectacle and lets the strange carved construction of the letters take centre stage.
The result feels a little like an old upright piano sitting in the corner of a saloon or parlour — heavy wooden feet, turned details, carved edges and slightly mismatched parts that have accumulated character over time.
Heavy slabs sit alongside narrow bodies, bulbous curves, pinched waists, oversized feet and unusual little notches. Some characters feel architectural, others more like pieces of furniture. The differences are intentional. Rather than smoothing everything into a perfectly consistent digital alphabet, Old Piano keeps the awkwardness and irregularity of its hand-drawn beginnings.
Because Old Piano and Showbill share the same basic skeleton, the two typefaces are designed to feel naturally related. Use Old Piano on its own, or pair it with Showbill when you want to move between simpler typography and something more decorative while keeping the same underlying character.
Think of them as two pieces from the same room: Showbill is the handbill announcing tonight’s entertainment; Old Piano is the carved upright sitting inside.
This is an experimental display font made to be played with — tall, imperfect, nostalgic, sturdy and just a little strange.

If you already own Showbill, you may recognise that shared DNA — the two fonts can be used independently or together as companion faces.
Please also note: the print textures, photographs and styling shown in the preview images are not included as part of the font.
